On top of the damage that the pandemic has wrecked on children’s education, individualized help is often cost prohibitive to families facing economic barriers. Tutoring can cost upwards of $75 an hour, or nearly $5,000 a year for a household with two children. At Tutoring Chicago, weekly one-to-one tutoring with a consistent adult is entirely free of charge. 1,000 students in 1st through 9th grades meet weekly with their trained volunteer tutors—all at no cost to their families. While Tutoring Chicago’s programs are free to students, free tutoring is not free of cost.
